Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides

Why have they made yet another Pirates movie? Shouldn’t this franchise be well and truly over? This was my initial reaction to the latest 3D swashbuckling adventure but it turns out there’s still some room for adventure on the high seas. Lovable scallywag Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) has been forced into cahoots with the notorious and dangerous Blackbeard who is on the hunt for the fountain of youth. Blackbeard’s daughter Angelica (Penelope Cruz), who is Sparrow’s feisty and cunning ex-lover, is traveling with them. Meanwhile Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) is hot on their trails with one nasty grudge. This film has high-speed carriage chases and sword fights galore. The effects are great, especially when it comes to the deadly and seductive mermaids. Depp, McShane and Rush all deliver solid performances and Cruz is … okay. Well, easier to root for than pouty Keira Knightley. A particular treat is a cameo by Keith Richards who plays Sparrow’s dad. Now there’s a fella who could do with a sip from the fountain of youth.
